Introduction to Pet First Aid for Pet Professionals
Welcome to your Pet First Aid for Pet Professionals course, this section begins with a short introduction and course overview before you meet our vet and learn about Pet First Aid and the Law, and the role of the first aider. You will learn how to keep your pet safe in an emergency as well as pet-proofing your own home and the importance of hand hygiene and the use of gloves. In addition, this section contains specific training on car accidents, and how to treat injuries commonly caused by car accidents
Precautions and Safety
In this section, you will learn about the use of muzzles and gloves and how to approach an animal that has been injured. We will also look more into pet-proofing homes and preventing accidents.
Pet Anatomy and Physiology
In this section, you will learn about the anatomy and physiology of animals, this includes the digestive process in dogs, the types of bones and joints, and the circulation, nervous and muscular systems.
First Aid Kits and Equipment
The correct kit and equipment is important to any first aider. In this section, we look at Pet First Aid Kits, including collars, sprays, wipes plasters, and powders. You will learn about the bandages we use, including bandage aftercare and the use of foil blankets.
Checking a Pets health
This section contains information on how to carry out an initial assessment and how to check general health, this includes taking the pulse and temperature, looking at their gum colour, and collecting a urine sample. We look at the different ways animals show pain and give an example of how to carry out a comprehensive assessment and check vital signs.
Pet Accidents and First Aid
In this section, you will learn about the classification of emergencies, the recovery position, and what to do if a cat is involved in an accident.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - CPR
This section includes breathing and respiratory problems and how to give CPR to an animal before moving on to drowning and near and secondary drowning and its treatment. You will learn about the use and administration of Oxygen during CPR.
Choking
This section looks specifically at choking and the procedures of dealing with a choking animal.
Bleeding Control
In this section, you will learn about the different types of bleeds and their treatment, as well as dealing with shock.
Different Conditions you may see
There are many different conditions that affect animals, in this section, you will learn about the signs and symptoms you are likely to see in each of them.
Injuries
In this section, you will learn about the different injuries you may see, and how to treat them in a first aid emergency, including bandaging techniques and inducing vomiting.
Illness
There are many types of illnesses, in this section, you will learn about the most common, their signs and symptoms, and when to seek veterinary help.
Parasites that affect pets
In this section, we look at parasites such as fleas, ticks, and lungworm, how to recognise and treat the problems they cause, and what to do when it becomes a first aid emergency.
Cats
This section is specifically about cats and includes information on how to restrain a cat for treatment, their vaccinations, pregnancy, and cat flu.
Different types and sizes of animals
In this section, you will learn about older dogs, Brachycephalic breeds, and smaller animals, including reptiles.
Summary to Pet First Aid for Pet Professionals
Finally, in this section, we will look at how Fireworks and Thunderstorms affect our dogs, and how to prepare for your practical session (if required). The short course summary provides important information on how to take the final test, print your certificate of completion, and access other course resources.
